Just 5 years ago, getting more that 250 HP out of a hot hatch seemed more than exciting and the market was flodded with mostly 2.0 liter turbocharged hot hatches that all cornered well and were priced accordingly. Sadly though for those of you that live in the United State – The A-Class won’t be making it for now, but you might expect all the mentioned updates to make their way onto the CLA45 with the added punch ofcourse, 381 of those if you might be asking.
But Mercedes had to crash the party back then with the Mercedes-AMG A45 which was the most powerful 2.0 liter production engine in 2013 up until Audi decided to drop the RS 3 with 362 hp.
Mercedes wasn’t too keen on losing the title so they did what they do best. More power! The Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic now produces 381 hp and is considered the flagship of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class range after going through a mid-cycle update during the Goodwood Festival of Speed ahead of the official debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
As for the engine that produces the lovely and frankly over-the-top 381 hp it remains the same 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that also produces an astounding 350 lb-ft of torque with the same boost pressure before rated at 26 psi. So how did Mercedes engineers manage to get all that extra punch? the fiddled with combustion cycles and re-configured the valve assembly and adjusted the camshafts and valves with some other tuning adjustments.
This still is a family 5 door hatchback that can get from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and handle a corner better than rabbit fleeing from a cheetah thanks to its sophisticated AWD system and the adjustable sports suspension setup that now features a two-stage adaptive damping and a Race mode.
This enables the driver to turn everything up through the Dynamic Select driving modes system. The new 2016 Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic will get shorter transmission ratios in 3rd to 7th gear, better aerodynamics via revised rear diffuser and front spoiler. You will also get a new multi-function sports steering wheel and Apple’s CarPlay smartphone integration plus some Internet connectivity.
For 2016, you will get the new AMG Dynamic Select system which controls exhaust noise, gearshifts, ESP level, throttle map and damping characteristics by selecting different modes that range from “Race” to “Comfort”. The rest of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz A Class didn’t get much upgrades besides the scheduled face-lift. The front headlight units receive LED strips, a completely revised front bumper with an extended intake and new sleeker taillights.
Now for those of you looking to purchase the tamer version, you could chose from a diesel (CDI), or the 2016 Mercedes-Benz A Class A180 d SE which gets 81-mpg and does a 0-62 mph sprint in 11.3 seconds. If buying one the fastest hatchback on earth is what you’re after, look no further and purchase this insane hyper hatch.
