The Lexus Ux Concept is what the Japanese luxury carmaker envisions for the future of its compact SUV segment if we ever make it that far. The compact SUV was designed by the ED2 design center in Southern France and it isn’t short on wild ideas, let’s take a look at what the 2016 Paris Motor Show brought us.
Simon Humphries, President of ED2 said; “The biggest challenge for any designer is always to create something new and original, yet with relevance to both the customer and the brand,” he also hinted why this concept was made in the first place “Overall, this is a product which gives another hint of the potential for Lexus’ design approach to satisfy those criteria. The expression of a progressive, strong yet artistic, and premium product which further enhances Lexus’ unique and challenging brand position.”
The Lexus UX Concept features a sharp elegant design that remains true to the Lexus DNA. Clearly, the concept is lower to ground than traditional SUV’s, with a coupe-like seating position that enhances the driving experience and the handling performance. Unmistakably, this thing looks Lexus all throughout. But don’t take our word for it, Lexus said the UX concept has “low ground clearance and a coupe-like driving position, reinforcing the dynamic performance promise embedded in the compact packaging of the design,”
Lexus also said they designed the car in such a way that if viewed from the top, you can notice how the car focuses on an “inside-out” look achieved by reducing the aluminum body parts and adding an X-shaped backbone. The Lexus UX Concept also looks very sporty thanks to the long hood and the raked see-through A-pillars.
The paint-job is quite exotic as well, Lexus calls it an immersive Amethyst paint which highlights volume changes on the exteriors body panels and defines the sculpted lines to emphasize the UX’s volume. Alexandre Gommier – Interior Designer at ED2 said the idea behind the Inside-out design came when “We wanted to show the human-centric aspect of the concept in a visually as well as philosophically strong way. A strong symbiosis between the exterior and interior was felt to be important by all the designers involved. To create the anticipation from the exterior, which could then have a visual link and expand into the interior, was a key goal.”
The Interior of the Lexus UX Concept is based on the Kinetic Seat Concept previewed by Lexus earlier while the rest of the cockpit is uber futuristic the rear has a sofa-like design which is to increase passenger comfort. The interior looks super roomy thanks to the space efficient design technique that rids the car of any unnecessary materials and objects.
If you look closely, you would notice that the interior has two screen housings infused from the cars fenders and into the cabin – that project the images seen at the back by the rear facing cameras which rids the car of any traditional side mirrors. The rest of the cars functions are projected onto a hologram on the center consoles crystal structure to control things like climate and vehicle information.
