To put things into perspective straight away – The new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 makes 20 HP less than the Italian twin-turbo V-8 Ferrari 488 GTB and 10 HP less than the McLaren 650S for a price tag that’s not even less than half of what you could expect from either brands.
The new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 packs a 640 HP punch and 640 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 found in similar GM Performance vehicles like the Corvette Z06 and the Cadillac CTS-V – Now with the right handling package, this car could be a very hard bundle to refuse.
Everyones scared, and they should rightfully be – The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 brings the lighter Sixth-generation Alpha platform to play, a 640 hp figure and a 10 speed automatic developed in Cahoots with the guys at Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F]. The peeps down at Ford and probably other exotic marques are wondering why GM would drop such monstrous machine into the market. A machine that is capable of digesting the Mustang GT350R for lunch and snacking on the European counterparts for dinner.
The new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 weighs 200 pounds less than the old one and has 60 hp more. The engineers at GM tested the ZL1 religiously at the infamous Nürburgring to get all the settings right – The ZL1 is not low on tech either, such variables like the electronic limited-slip differential, magnetic ride control, performance oriented traction control and launch control make it a smart muscle car.
You will get the Brembo six-piston calipers with 15.35 inch discs (front) 4 piston calipers covering 14.37 inch discs (rear) package with 20 inch Goodyear Eagle F1 tires measuring in at 285/30 upfront and 305/30 at the rear. Almost everything you would expect from a performance GM model, not quite as exciting as the Ford Mustang GT350R that seems to bring things to another level with every pit and panel.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a ZL1 without the aggressive body kit that features a front splitter, a fixed rear spoiler and wider fenders. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 also has Recaro bucket seats with ZL1 badging and a flat bottom racing steering wheel with suede lining – just the expected treatment.
