The Mercedes SLS AMG GT (the outgoing model) had this weird stigma about it, to me at least it always felt different from any other supercar. I always thought that the SLS AMG GT was an understated supercar, it always took itself very seriously and behaved well, but of course once unleashed it would display an array of wonderful sounds and elaborate tricks. To put it bluntly, it wasn’t a boyish supercar like the Lamborghini Aventador.. It is the athlete that never shows off he has an eight pack.

By now, you might be expecting me to say that new 2016 Mercedes AMG GT changes that stigma, but the truth is – no it does not. And by no means is that a bad thing. The SLS has been doing what it was successful at since 1952 with the 300SL Gullwing, it has always been a serious car for the spirited businessman.

The 2016 Mercedes AMG GT is what you could call an even more serious car, because it managed to ditch the flashy gullwing doors, and the 6.2 liter V8.  It is sad but it was inevitable as Mr. Anderson would tell Neo. The new turbo era is stronger than ever, and car manufacturers need to compete so the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT got a smaller twin turbo v8.

You might also notice that Mercedes removed the “Benz” from the cars name, due to the automakers decision to introduce the “AMG” to all of Mercedes’s performance cars in a new naming scheme they adopted not too long ago.

The AMG GT will be given a 4.0 Liter twin Turbo V8 that sponges out 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque offered from the base GT. Another more potent version is available for grabs, the Mercedes AMG GTS puts out 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. That is nothing impressive in today’s flashy numbers in the world of supercars and hypercars.

It does however introduce new tech like the “inside V” which means that Mercedes developed the M178 engine which has two of the turbochargers sit within the engines V shape configuration giving the M178 a compact design, add to that the dry sump lubrication system while placing the engine low in the bay giving the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT great handling and a perfect center of gravity.

To increase the “wow” factor, the M178 features two turbos that give you a beefy torque curve with maximum torque arriving at just 1600 rpm, while the Mercedes AMG GTS sees maximum torque at 1750 rpm. Compare that to the outgoing model the SLS AMG GT and you would notice that the 6.2 liter in the outgoing model would reach maximum torque at 4750.

The 0-60 mph time is done in 3.9 Seconds, while top speed for the GT and GT S is limited to 189 and 193 mph respectively. Which isn’t that impressive in todays supercar standards, but then again remember the talk we had in the beginning about it being a serious car.

The interior of the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT is nothing short of spectacular, seriously it is one of the best interiors I have ever seen. Coupled with looks that can strike you down and keep you staring for hours at your car when you have just returned home.

And that comes by no coincidence, the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT cabin mimics the engines cylinder layout by making the eight buttons and knobs arranged in the center console in such a way that they highlight the beauty of the cylinder’s organic shape.

The GT S has an electronically controlled rear axle locking differential and a performance exhaust system with variable exhaust vanes, while the GT is equipped with a mechanical locking differential. The 2016 Mercedes AMG GT S will get 15.4 inch perforated & ventilated brake discs in the front and 14.2 inches in the rear. The meaner and better GTS gets 14.2 inches all round and a staggered Rim setup featuring 19″ in the front and 20″ the back. Remind me why you would still buy the base GT again?

The styling of the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT is inspired by Mercedes’s new design direction, it benefits from a completely organic looking structure that rids the AMG GT of any sharp lines that might upset the eye, the word “Curves” comes to mind. The designers were looking to produce a shape that does not have any sharp lines, and if you look closely you will see that the car rarely introduces a sharp edge on any of its body panels.

Price is set at around $200,000 and starting at Aed 670,000-800,000 Dirhams.
