Maserati just confirmed the production of their first all-electric vehicle due sometime in the next 10 year and they said it would be very different from the rest of the electric vehicles currently found.

Roberto Fedeli (ing at Alfa Romeo – Maserati) admits that the company does not need nor is it interested in going head to head with the Tesla vehicles. This is because the Italian marque is all about luxury and an EV from Maserati must fit all the right criteria. Maserati said that they would be the last to release an all-electric vehicle and are not interested in following the tide.

“We will be last (with a production EV), and we have to arrive to the market with something different. Very different,” he said.

“A Tesla fighter probably [is] not a good idea. I don’t think that Tesla is the best product in the market…the execution and quality of the products of Tesla are the same as a German OEM in the 1970s. Their solutions are not the best.”

Fedeli has been told by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles chief Sergio Marchionne to start working on the new Maserati EV as soon as possible, but he did not mention what sort of platform or what type of vehicle it would be. He did mention that the most difficult task was inserting the DNA of Maserati into an EV.

“[In an EV], you feel a lot of weight, more than anything else. Torque and power are interesting for a very few seconds but then the weight does not let you enjoy the car on a normal road. That’s inconsistent with the brand we are representing and needs to be solved,” he said.

To conclude, Fedeli says that although it would be an Electric Maserati it would steel feel like one although it might not sound like one.
