If you haven’t heard yet, Airbus is working on a fleet of autonomous flying taxi machines for cities with high congestion and rush-hour traffic. Hint, Dubai – New York, Brussels, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Beijing.
This isn’t a concept or an idea either. Airbus says they are prototyping the single-passenger flying vehicle and the multiple passenger CityAirbus concepts. The single seater vehicle is the Project Vehana which should be developed under the Airbus Silicon Valley outpost. Test flights should begin around 2017 and continue all the way up to 2018.
The CityAirbus design is the chosen design for the autonomous Autonomous Flying Taxi although tests will be conducted with human pilots to ensure the concept works before it is put into production. It will take off in a vertical position and lands vertically as well thanks to the larger electric propeller.
“The market will develop quickly, once we are able to deploy the first vehicles in megacities and [to] demonstrate the benefits of quiet, emission-free air transport at competitive prices.” Said Jorg Muller, a member of Airbus Group’s corporate development department.
