Ford has recently promised us a good variety of 12 vehicles to be added to its performance line-up and so far they haven’t disappointed us. We have the F-150 Raptor, the insane Ford GT, The Mustang GT350 – GT350R, the new 2015 Ford Focus RS, and now the 2015 Ford Focus ST with power upgrades.
It is no secret that the 2015 Ford Focus ST is one my favorite hot hatches and I always recommend it to any one looking for a good/fast hatch overall because it combines essential elements for every gear-head out there and doesn’t just “focus” on one thing and one thing only. But I always get a headache from hot-hatch enthusiasts as soon as they know I side with the ST over the French and the German equivalents out there without mentioning names – Let me explain once and for all why the 2015 Ford Focus ST is the preferable selection over the other two.
It delivers stellar performance from that little turbocharged 4 potter, 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque to be exact – that’s 30hp more than the more expensive Golf GTI. It is relatively very easy to maintain with parts costing much less than the other two and it looks pretty sick with that wide back and unique sharp styling with a very spacious cabin. My biggest problem with the Focus ST would be the soft handling which could be easily fixed with some spacers, a $300 COBB Anti-Sway Bar that doesn’t affect ride comfort and some good Michelin rubber. But perhaps the biggest reason behind choosing the ST is the endless possibilities to individually tune the car without having to lose a leg in the process and the fact that you can make this car pop and crackle is a bonus (watch video below – I always recommend the Roush catback for anyone looking for an exhaust upgrade on the ST, It sounds miles better than stock).
And now to make things even better, Ford decided to give this beast more power, 275 hp and 296 lb-ft of torque which puts this hot hatch close to the new 2015 Volkswagen Golf R making things really interesting and intense for the German R. That’s 23 hp and 26 lb-ft over stock and probably one or half a second faster in the 0-60mph time, the quarter mile and the figure eight.
Ford Performance Product Manager Adam Gair said in a release “The 2015 Focus ST MP275 upgrade is the latest addition to Ford Performance’s vast Focus and Fiesta performance catalog that gives enthusiasts the components they need to take their car to the next level,” This package will be called the MP275 2015 Focus ST which will add a mountune induction kit, a mountune mTune handset, and all of the installation hardware including a mountune airfilter which can control induction sound while the mountune mTune handset allows for a more aggressive engine mapping.
If you happen to be stressing over the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R being much more powerful than the ST, then you are completely overshooting the comparison being that the Golf R is priced at Aed 156,000 with 280hp at hand, instead it should be compared to the similarly priced RS and it doesn’t stand a chance against the new 345 hp AWD 2016 Ford Focus RS that will introduce heaps of new tech onboard. And I’m not being biased here since I drive a Vdub and my biggest issue with German cars would be their reserved styling and tuning which the ST seems to throw out the window with a couple of upgrades.
The Ford Performance MP275 Focus ST performance upgrade is street-legal in all 50 states and doesn’t void the factory when installed by an authorized Ford Performance technician.
